Arts & Athletics Based Learning Program
The Arts and Athletics Based Learning Program (A²BL) is a low-cost program in Allensworth designed to build community connection, creativity, and physical well-being. It brings together movement and imagination in a safe, inclusive space where youth can grow beyond traditional limits.
Why Arts & Athletics Matter in Allensworth?
With limited recreational opportunities, community members have stepped up to create spaces where youth have a safe, engaging, and inclusive environment where they can thrive physically, creatively, and intellectually.
In 2023, Allensworth resident and school bus driver Humberto Vargas launched the Allensworth Running Club (ARC) in partnership with APA and local program sponsors. Despite extreme heat and poor air quality, 8 of 13 first-time runners on the newly formed Allensworth Cross Country Team qualified for the AAU Cross-Country National Championships in Tallahassee, Florida. Impressively, all 8 runners placed in the top 25 in the country for their age groups, with 18 kids qualifying in Florida that first year. Three runners placed in the top 8, earning All-American status. The team fundraised to participate and returned home with national medals. These achievements show what is possible when youth are given access, mentorship, and belief.
Program Objectives:
Nurture creativity and support mental health
Promote physical wellness
Cultivate an inclusive environment
Develop social and leadership skills
Strengthen Allensworth community connections
A²BL Launch
Arts & Athletics Based Learning (A²BL) officially launched in the summer of 2025 as the evolution of athletics-based programming into a broader learning model. While historically it’s been focused on youth sports, in 2026 and the future, AABL is centered on wellness for all ages. AABL is the culmination of two years of research and development led by APA members and affiliates:

Development
A²BL offers a comprehensive mix of arts, athletics, social development, and student support programming designed to engage the whole student. Participants explore visual, performing, and cultural arts; take part in team sports and health education; build leadership and life skills through workshops, guest speakers, and service projects; and receive academic support through homework time, mentorship, and enriching field trips.
Students will experience a meaningful investment in their growth and future through A²BL. The program is designed to close opportunity gaps while strengthening ties to the Allensworth community. By engaging at an early age in community-centered activities, students gain exposure to real-world involvement, building a strong foundation for long-term participation and impact.
Through this experience, students will develop leadership skills, a sense of civic responsibility, and a deeper connection to their community, preparing them to take on future roles within organizations such as the CAC, APA Operating Team, and broader APA leadership.
In addition, A²BL connects students to a wider network of programs outlined in the Allensworth Community Plan, offering a continuum of learning, engagement, and empowerment opportunities. As part of a broader cultural and educational initiative, the program also highlights the importance of community heritage and creative expression, positioning students within a vibrant and supportive cultural ecosystem.
